Safe Do It Yourself Labor Induction
~ Methods to Self Induce Labor at Home Naturally

Do you want to perform a 'do it yourself labor induction' at home ?

Below is information on different methods to self induce labor at home.

But before performing a self induction of labor at home, it is important to know that labor will only happen optimally if your body is ready. This means, if you try to do self induction of labor too early, chances that you will succeed is slim.

In fact, the only labor induction techniques which works pretty well to 'force' your body into labor at the earliest (37 or 38 weeks) is medical induction. This is because it gives synthetic hormone continuously to ensure your uterus contracts regularly and with certain strength. Still, even with this method, it's not guaranteed that you will go into full labor in a normal way. In fact, many moms end up in c-section because the labor becomes harder than normal and drags on.

In contrast, if you're past due date and is trying to self induce labor in order not to be induced medically (for instance, if you're around 41 weeks), then these following do it yourself labor induction may work.

Self Induction of Labor - Does It work ?

As alluded above, you may be able to self induce labor at home naturally. There are many safe methods to self induce labor naturally. However, it is important to know that they are largely anecdotal, and they do not work consistently across the board. What it means is that while one method may work for one mother, it may not work for other mother.

Also, because these methods are not standardized, there is no exact guidelines as to how to do it properly.

So what you have here basically is a collection of methods for self induction of labor which have work for centuries for a lot of women. However, in contrast to the drug-based labor induction, there is no way of knowing whether a particular method will work for you, with one exception, which is acupressure. With 80% effectiveness across the board, your odd of getting the labor started after acupressure treatment is higher than other do it yourself labor induction methods. But you need to know how to perform this, though, and of course a labor partner who can perform this for you.

Safety of Do It Yourself Labor Induction at Home

There are many ways to perform a natural labor induction at home. However, 'natural' does not mean 'safe'. In fact, there are some natural labor induction methods which I won't feel comfortable to try on my own without any healthcare professional supervision, for instance, castor oil induction.

In my opinion, if you want to do a self induction of labor to avoid being induced by your obstetrician and you are going to do it without midwife's or healthcare professional supervision, it is important to just use the safest natural labor induction methods.

In this list, I only list natural labor induction methods which are safe enough to be done by yourself at home.

Do It Yourself Labor Induction I: Acupressure.

Acupressure can be used to help starting the labor safely, sustain the contraction and alleviate pain during labor. In order to do that, you need to know the point to exert pressure on in your body, how long, and how strong you exert the pressure.

This is the only method which has 80% effectiveness in starting labor within 48 hours of treatment. It's also safe to do at home. What you need is a labor partner to perform an acupressure on you. I highly recommend this technique if you are overdue and want to get into labor fast.

Do It Yourself Labor Induction II: Eating specific kind of food to self induce labor.

Some people swear that certain kind of food can induce labor naturally. Here is the list of them:

  • Food containing oregano and basil, such as certain type of pizza and eggplant parmesan.
  • Pineapple.
  • Spicy food.

You may ask why those food can be used to induce labor. Nobody knows for certain, but it has been speculated that the nature of the food causes the cervix to ripen and uterine to contract. More information on foods to induce labor can be found here.

Do It Yourself Labor Induction III: Squating, Working Hard and Walking to Induce Labor.

Walking, squating or exerting yourself have been reported to speed up the onset of labor. The methods work by allowing the gravity to make the baby's head go down to press and gently open up the cervix. This can then stimulate contraction to start.

Do It Yourself Labor Induction IV: Nipple Stimulation.

You can stimulate your nipple by either using a partner or a breast pump to mimic a baby sucking movement. Upon nipple stimulation, your body will release oxytocin, a natural hormone which causes the uterus to contract. Therefore, contraction can be stimulated by the sucking movement on the nipple.

Do the stimulation as needed (every few minutes, until you feel contraction). Once the contraction becomes regular, stop doing the stimulation and let the labor ensues.

Do It Yourself Labor Induction V: Sex

Sex is another way to self induce labor. In fact, I find that often healthcare providers suggest this. Again, it's not a guarantee that your labor will start the minute you finish having sex. But this might be your ticket to hold your baby within 24 hours.

Other Ways to Induce Labor.

Below is other ways people use to stimulate labor:

  • Natural Labor Induction.
While the above list contains methods to naturally self induce labor at home, there are other natural labor induction techniques which are best to perform under the care of healthcare provider, or at least under the care of 'somebody who knows what s/he's doing' because of the potential side effects when the dosage is not right. • Medical Labor Induction.
Medical labor induction is induction performed only by doctors, midwives or nurses at the hospital. In this setting, synthetic hormones are administered continuously to ensure continuous labor.
