How To Ensure The Home Birth Safety

If you want to have a homebirth, you have the responsibility to ensure your home birth safety. By this I don't mean that only homebirthers are required to be responsible for their own birth. I'd like to say that every prospective mom, regardless of her birthing choice, should take a responsibility of her birth.

However, as a prospective homebirther, you need to take an extra responsibility to ensure home birth safety if you want to achieve what you want, that is: having a homebirth. Otherwise, the midwife may end up suggesting that you're no longer safe to have a homebirth, and instead, should have a hospital birth.

This was what my midwife told me on my last pregnancy when she found a protein in my urine, showing that I had not been taking care of myself. She told me to be responsible in ensuring my homebirth safety. If I did not take care of myself, I might set myself on complication during the homebirth which necessitated me to have a homebirth transfer.

I certainly didn't want that.

So what step you should take to ensure your home birth safety ?

Here are the steps you should take to ensure that your home birth is as safe as possible:

  • Do your homework, and find a good and experienced midwife
  • Read, read, read. Read any childbirth information you can get your hand on. Aim for publications which emphasizes on natural childbirth and homebirth.
  • Take care of yourself by eating healthily and exercise regularly.
  • Make sure that you have more than one birth attendant. Usually your midwife will bring in other midwife as an assistant. It's very rare that she would do it on her own. Ask to ensure that your midwife does have a partner. This is important in emergency situation where both you and your baby are in complication and need helps from professionals.
  • Make sure you have your cell phone charged up and car filled up just in case of home birth transfer.
  • Ask your midwife about medication she brings for emergency. Make sure she has supply and equipment for emergency such as postpartum haemorrhage and newborn resuscitation.
  • Make sure you have hot and cold water prepared.
