Midwife Fee
~ How Much Does A Midwife Cost

You may wonder what the midwife fee is going to be, considering that a midwife offers personalized services. You may think that a midwife must cost a lot.

Not so ...

In fact, getting a midwife is a bargain considering how much time she spends with you.

Depending on where you live, a midwife fee can range between 1500-3500 dollars. These are the services she provides with that kind of fee:

  • Personalized prenatal check up.
Midwives differ in their prenatal check up policy. Some asks the clients to go to their practices/home. Some visit the clients. I was fortunate enough to hire a midwife who always came to visit me for prenatal check up. A midwife usually asks you to come for prenatal check up once a month until the seventh month, then twice a month on the eighth month, and every week afterwards. Click here to see what happens during prenatal visit or check up.

  • Personalized labor/birth care
She will be there throughout the labor, birth and for at least two hours after birth to make sure that you are all right.

If you transfer to hospital, she will accompany you there. After birth, she will check on your baby, determine the APGAR score and do all the newborn procedures (except for circumcission and immunization. However she can refer you to a pediatrician who can do this for you).

  • Personalized post partum care.
She will help you with breastfeeding and baby care, perform newborn screening (blood test and PKU test) as required by your states, check on your health, and provide information on family planning. My midwife is a pro-life person, so she did not give me information on other family planning methods except for the natural family planning procedures. So don't be surprised if your midwife calls you or pops in to your home several times after the birth-day.

  • Filing for a birth certificate and social security number.

  • All the medicine and supplies required during the labor and birth (including the birth kit) are included in the midwife fee.

  • Water tub for water birth.
The availability of water tub really depends on your midwife. She may or may not have one. In my case, my midwife happens to have a proper bath tub and she lent and set that up for me free of charge.

  • Extras. In my case, my midwife includes one free postpartum massage a few days after delivery.

The following are not usually included in the midwife fee:

  • any laboratory test.
  • any supplement you need to take during the pregnancy.
  • ultrasound.
  • post partum pads, formula milk, newborn clothes and other goodies the hospital gives you before discharging you
