Midwife Services
What Are They ?

You may wonder what midwife services a midwife can offer to her client and how they differ from services offered by an obstetrician.

Well, in fact, midwife offers the same services as obstetrician, which are: pregnancy, labor/birth, and after birth care. What makes midwife services different is the quality and quantity of the care. A midwife "literally" supports the client throughout pregnancy, labor/birth and after the childbirth.

You may wonder, how come a midwife provides such personalized midwife services ?

The personalized care is possible because a midwife only deals with one woman at a time. So she's able to be available all the time throughout the process. Therefore, I think the term midwife, meaning "with woman", is very suited to the nature of midwifery, which is to be with the woman in childbirth process continuously.

Now, let's start by looking at how a midwife care the clients during pregnancy.

Midwife Services During Pregnancy

Midwife services to a pregnant woman is manifested by providing a one-on-one and personalized care during prenatal check-up. Midwive services focus on prevention rather than cure, like what an old adage says: "An ounce of prevention worths a pound of cure". It is not surprising tha midwives emphasize a lot on woman's nutrition, woman childbirth education and how a woman can improve her physical well-being.

In addition, unlike physician, a midwife does not only look after the client at the physical level. She also looks after her in the emotional level by talking and communicating a lot with the clients and their families. Prenatal check-up with a midwife is often long and looks more like a visit from a friend. If you are used with the amount of time an obstetrician spends with you, you will be surprised (a good surprise) on how a midwife spends time with you.

Yes, midwives spend a lot of time to communicate with their clients and their families. This enables them to better cater her clients wishes and their families' needs. The intensive communication also enables a bond between the caregiver and client to form long before the due date. The bond and trust between a pregnant woman and her caregiver are very important during the labor and birthing process because the women feel comfortable and supported. This, in turn, reduces the amount of stress and fear a woman is experiencing during birth, hence makes the labor goes smoother.

The excellent midwife services during prenatal period dramatically increases the possibility of women to give birth without complication.

A lot of moms were able to give birth without complication with midwives although they went through a c-section previously due to various reasons. My midwife, for example, has numerous cases of women who previously had to go through a c-section because of high blood pressure and/or preclampsia. Under her care, these women managed to stay in control of their blood pressure and gave birth at home with no complication.

Midwife Services During Labor And Birth

Unlike physician, a midwife stays with the laboring woman throughout the whole labor and birthing process, supporting them both physically and emotionally. No matter how long the labor is, a midwife puts the client's needs first, by not rushing the labor and letting her client to birth on her own time. Indeed, letting the nature to take its course is the best way to deal with labor. If this process is interfered by giving an induction using pitocin, for example, then the woman is no longer on the course of normal labor. Her uterus contracts 'unnaturally', and causes a great deal of pain.

Although a midwife lets woman labor naturally, this doesn't mean that she lets the client suffers throughout the labor. In contrary, she works with the pregnant woman to cope with the contraction naturally using various methods which have been used many generations effectively.

Since home-birth midwives are committed to non intervention policy, they always resort to the most gentlest way to deal with labor and birth. This is possible because they are trained to deal with normal birth, and consequently, are very skillful when it comes to assisting birth. Unlike most physicians who often resort to invasive procedures such as episiotomy, vacuum/forceps delivery or c-section, midwives have tips and tricks to help a woman to give birth and to ease labor naturally.

My midwife, for example, spent time massaging her client's birth canal to smoothen the birthing process. As a result, this client gave birth to an 8 pound baby without even a tear and recovered quickly. Were this client was in hospital at that time, it's almost certain that she would end up with either episiotomy or forceps/vacuum delivery which would leave her feeling sore for days to come. An obstetrician would not have time to massage somebody's cervix and would prefer an easy way out regardless of what a woman would feel afterwards.

Midwife Services After Birth

If you give birth at home with a midwife, she will give you support after birth too. If you are a first time mom, she gives advices on how to breastfeed and how to care for the baby. She will also perform basic newborn check-up and screening as required by your state. In addition, she will tell you what your options are in terms of family planning methods.

In the next few days, she may pop in to check whether you are okay with the baby.

As a new and inexperienced mom, with no parents nearby, I am forever grateful that I had my first baby with a midwife. She took numerous phone calls from me during the first few months after birth to answer my silly questions. She also visited a couple of times to make sure that I settled well.

Therefore, I encourage you to consider midwife as your primary care provider for your pregnancy and birth. Midwife services rock !
