Pregnancy Books
~ Which One Should I Read ?
If you are aiming for natural birth, then you should read pregnancy books and childbirth books geared for preparing for natural birth. It means that you should read selectively.
Most mainstream pregnancy books do not give you enough information to prepare for natural childbirth. In contrast, these childbirth books only scratch the surface of the subject of pregnancy and childbirth, and are mostly written for future hospital birth audiences who are indifferent towards natural birth.
If you want to have a natural birth and/or a homebirth, then it's better for you to read on pregnancy books and childbirth books which give you information on how to prepare for natural birth.

Here is the list of my favourite childbirth books:
- Gentle Birth Choices: A guide to making informed decision about birthing centers, birth attendants, water births and hospital births by Barbara Harpers and Suzanne Arms.
This book is great if you want to have a gentle natural birth, but you're toying between hospital birth and other birth setting options.
- Birthing From Within by Pam England.
This childbirth book is good for preparing you mentally and emotionally for you childbirth. It's a really empowering and confidence-builder book.
- Home Birth by Sheila Kitzinger , Special Delivery by Rahima Baldwin and Ina May's Guide To Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin.
These books contain a wealth of childbirth information and will prepare yourself well for the childbirth. They also contain tips for alleviating labor pains, and tricks you can do during childbirth for different scenarios.
- Natural Childbirth, the Bradley Way, by Susan Mc.Cutcheon-Koneg.
THis is the recommended book if you want to use the Bradley method for your childbirth. I used Bradley Method for my two homebirths, and it works well for me. If you're interested in Bradley's method, you may also want to read the original book of Bradley method (Husband-coached Childbirth by Dr. Bradley). However, I find that Susan's book is more user-friendly and easy to read than the original book is.It also contains a lot of pictures of the techniques suggested, which really helps.
Finally, here are three additional pregnancy books you may want to consider to read :
- Hypnobirthing, the Mongan Method by Marie F Mongan.
It's the only book you need to read if you're interested in incorporating hypnosis during childbirth to help you cope with labor intensity.
- Childbirth Without Fear: The Principles and Practice of Natural Childbirth by Michael Odent and Grantly Dick-Read.
This childbirth book explains that the main cause of labor pain is because the mother is in fear and postulates that if the mother is in comfortable environment and possesses no fear, then the childbirth is not going to hurt.
- Birth Without Violence by Frederick Leboyer.
This pregnancy book explains how to give birth to a baby as gently as possible.
